In this seminar we will explore the world of some of Jane Austen’s most famous novels. Although being known as a great writer of romantic fiction, Austen’s works are more than just love and match-making. She casts a critical eye on social conditions/traditions of her time and their impact on the life of the people. The dependence of women on marriage, social status and economic security are to be mentioned in this respect. Apart from examining the works on a literary basis, we will also focus on the Regency era and its representation in Austen’s novels. Critical essays will support the analyses of the selected works. Where appropriate, we will also consider filmic representations of Austen’s ideas, which will enable us to immerse into the different spheres of the Austen world.
