Due to their prophetic character, the works of H.G. Wells leave a lasting impression on the minds of their readers. In this seminar we will try to unravel the mystery that surrounds the ‘Prophet of Science Fiction’ and his writings. In order to achieve this, we will consider Wells’ educational background, the socio-cultural concerns of his time and examine his masterful way of merging scientific knowledge and profound writing skills. The future scenarios depicted in the selected works should not only be read in terms of predictions of future development, but also as a comment on society. With the help of critical essays, we will discuss attitudes, warnings and solutions implemented or implied in the narratives and interpret them in the light of our contemporary knowledge.
